Luis Canas Wineries are family owned and they date back to 1928. The vineyards are made up of small plots of old vines grown in chalky clay soils with low fertility on sloping ground and on terraces which gives them great sun exposure. The grapes in this wine are 95% Tempranillo 5% Garnacha grown in the renowned Rioja Alavesa sub region, which has been hand harvested and then hand sorted for quality. The wine has spent 12 months in 3 year old French 60% and American 40% barriques, before some bottle aging. It is a modern style of Tempranillo garnet in colour with a nose of lovely deep red roses and red berries with some vanilla and cedar. On the palate it is elegant and fresh with lovely red strawberries, cedar, spices and balsamic vinegar sweetness with round tannins. Complex and with great length. Delicious with cheeses, slow cooked beef ribs, lentils and chorizo. A lovely drop from a fabulous winery with a spectacular cellar door.
